Celia and Fiona discuss EDTA
This website is the product of a project that has been underway for several years. We, Celia and Fiona, feel that there is a need for support for early career educational developers, indeed for those who have not yet become educational developers too. Along with colleagues from around the world we have researched the areas that experienced developers believe newcomers need to know. This website is the result of that research.
Initially we planned a book - but on reflection we realized that what we wanted was something more open than a book, that could be updated regularly and, possibly most importantly, would allow for dialogue. This website is the result.
We hope that you will find the resources of use, but we also hope that you will join in the discussions and make this a dynamic platform for 'not yet', 'new' and 'more experienced' educational developers to share ideas, knowledge and expertise.
We have structured the site into 13 sections, plus a link to a community site. Many are self explanatory. Two that might confuse are 'Fake News' and 'The Real Deal'. These emerged from a discussion about the key theories and ideas that are shared in these circles. There are some ideas, learning styles being the most obvious, that were taken at face value. When subsequent research showed that they should be questioned, the old ideas seemed to hold sway. 'Fake News' is a collection of ideas that the educational development community told us (through emails to the UK's Staff and Educational Development Association - SEDA - and Canada's Educational Developers Caucus - EDC) were the most irritating ideas they would like to challenge. 'The Real Deal' is a collection of approaches and topics that educational developers tell us are the most significant to their practice. We anticipate, and welcome, a heated debate!
